WHAT
Over the spring semester of 2022 I had the opportunity to serve as lead tutor for the organization Bearcat Buddies. As a BB tutor, my shift’s (Friday AM w Price Academy) responsibility was to help kindergarten students with their reading. We also did various other activities with the students throughout the hour we spent with them such as working on learning numbers, writing letters, etc. As a lead tutor, I was tasked with helping out my shift’s tutors understand their responsibilities and give answers to any questions they might have throughout the semester. As a lead tutor we were also asked take part in one of the committees set up for BB and I was in the Program Sustainability committee which I served as a secretary for. SO WHAT
I joined Bearcat Buddies initially as a way for me to continue working with children as I have experience working with younger students through the GCTS Tamil School as a high-schooler. Working with children is my favorite volunteer experience and I decided this organization is one that I wanted to get more involved with given the chance. I decided to become a lead tutor as I believed I could provide a sense of comfort to my shift’s tutors. The most important part of tutoring and working with others in general is to make sure you yourself are comfortable and confident in what you are doing. As a mediator between the students, the tutors, and the organization I could provide that sense of security for my tutors.
NOW WHAT
I am going to continue on with this experience as I always felt fulfilled after my hourly encounter with my class every week. I would like to potentially join another committee next year to see the other ways I can help the program and understand the structure of Bearcat Buddies a little more. I believe the more involved I am able to get with the program, the faculty, and the students the more helpful I can be towards them all. The constant interaction and depth of this volunteer experience will be valuable for me to continue growing my skills in terms of communication and problem-solving. I am excited to meet new students and tutors as I continue with this volunteer experience during my college career!
